Prof. Feng Qian is Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Tsinghua University and Bayer Endowed Chair Professor. He also serves as a Principal Investigator at the Beijing Visual Science and Translational Eye Research Institute (BERI) and Director of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Oral Drug Intelligent Design and Delivery. Prof. Qian received his B.S. and M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. Prior to joining Tsinghua in 2012, he was a Principal Scientist at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he led research on novel drug delivery technologies, new drug development management, external academic collaborations, and technology evaluation.
The Qian Laboratory builds upon a deep understanding of clinical needs and the investigation of disease biological mechanisms, combining engineering-based drug design principles with advanced drug delivery technologies to address unmet clinical needs in major diseases such as blinding retinal diseases and cancer. The team focuses on elucidating the mechanisms by which drugs penetrate various physiological barriers, drug transport at the cellular and tissue levels, and drug-material interactions. Building on these insights, the lab designs innovative delivery technologies to optimize drug delivery efficiency and biodistribution, enhance targeting and safety, and ultimately achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes, safety profiles, and patient compliance.
Prof. Qian's research in drug delivery and new drug development has contributed to multiple drug candidates entering clinical trials and commercialization in both China and the United States. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers and serves as Associate Editor of Molecular Pharmaceutics. He is also a Committee Member of the Pharmaceutics Professional Committee and the Regulatory Science Professional Committee of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association.
